ABOUT THE PROJECT

The year 2023 is special for the International Environmental Film and Video Festival (FICA). This is because we have now consolidated, in this post-pandemic moment, this event as an inducer of cinema and culture in its most diverse manifestations in the state and also as a stage for fundamental discussions about our future.

With the theme Cerrado and Amazon: Two Territories, One Future, the festival brings a range of discussions, reflections, suggestions, and notes from researchers, specialists, and filmmakers from various parts of the world about the relationship between man and nature and its consequences for the planet. A global meeting of thinkers whose purpose is to glimpse a better and palpable scenario for the environment. This is what FICA has been about throughout its maturing and international recognition.

O ano de 2023 é especial para o Festival Internacional de Cinema e Vídeo Ambiental (Fica). Isso porque consolidamos agora, nesse momento de pós-pandemia, esse evento como indutor do cinema e da cultura em suas mais diversas manifestações no Estado, e também como palco de discussões fundamentais para o nosso futuro.

Com o tema Cerrado e Amazônia: Dois Territórios, Um Só Futuro, o festival traz um leque de discussões, reflexões, sugestões e apontamentos de pesquisadores, especialistas e realizadores de várias partes do mundo sobre a relação do homem com a natureza e suas consequências para o planeta. Um encontro global de pensadores que tem como propósito vislumbrar um cenário melhor e palpável para o meio ambiente. É disto que vem tratando o Fica ao longo de sua caminhada de amadurecimento e reconhecimento internacional.

A MOMENT OF CAREFULL

The Amazon is under international attention, with the increase in forest conversion in recent years frightening everyone. In the last four years, more than 35 thousand square kilometers were deforested, an area that exceeds the combined size of the states of Sergipe and Alagoas. This devastation is part of a perverse logic that makes entire populations vulnerable, stimulated to occupy new fronts, and involves the illegal occupation of public lands, illegal timber trade, and criminal mining, with the genocide scenario that we have witnessed with horror among the Yanomami.

But the Amazon is only one side of the problem and of the solution for climate change mitigation. Surrounding it is the 2.2 million square kilometers of the Brazilian Cerrado, which has already lost half of its original ecosystems and today suffers from deforestation levels similar to the Amazon, having lost almost 11 thousand square kilometers of native vegetation in 2022 alone. Due to the level of threat and the quantity of endemic species, the Cerrado is already recognized as a biodiversity hotspot. Furthermore, it has become the great granary of Brazil. It is home today to 49% of the area planted with soybeans in the country, 49% of the corn area, 98% of the cotton crop, 49% of the sugarcane areas and 76 million head of cattle.

A Amazônia está sob atenção internacional, com o incremento da conversão de florestas nos últimos anos assustando a todos. Nos últimos quatro anos, foram mais de 35 mil quilômetros quadrados desmatados, área que supera o tamanho somado dos estados de Sergipe e Alagoas. Essa devastação faz parte de uma lógica perversa, que vulnerabiliza populações inteiras estimuladas a ocupar novas frentes, e envolve grilagem de terras públicas, comércio ilegal de madeira e mineração criminosa, com o cenário de genocídio que testemunhamos estarrecidos entre os Yanomami.

Mas a Amazônia é apenas uma face do problema e da solução para a mitigação das mudanças climáticas. À sua volta, estendem-se os 2,2 milhões de quilômetros quadrados do Cerrado brasileiro, que já perdeu metade de seus ecossistemas originais e sofre hoje com níveis de desmatamento semelhantes aos da Amazônia, tendo perdido quase 11 mil quilômetros quadrados de vegetação nativa apenas em 2022. Pelo nível de ameaça e pela quantidade de espécies endêmicas, o Cerrado já é reconhecido como um hotspot de biodiversidade. Além disso, ele se tornou o grande celeiro do Brasil. Abriga hoje 49% da área plantada com soja no País, 49% da área de milho, 98% do cultivo de algodão, 49% das áreas de cana-de-açúcar e 76 milhões de cabeças de gado.

As mudanças climáticas em curso já vêm afetando a própria produção agrícola no Cerrado, com 28% das áreas produtoras de milho e soja fora do ideal climático na região Centro-Oeste do País, diminuindo a produtividade da soja e da safrinha do milho.

The world is at an environmental crossroads. Climate change is already a reality and affects the lives of all of us, but in an especially cruel way, it affects people in a more vulnerable situation. In addition to low income, violence, precarious housing, difficult access to quality public services, among others, there are the impacts of these changes in the form of more intense and concentrated rains that cause floods and landslides, heat waves, and changes in wind and precipitation regimes that affect agricultural production.

In this context, Brazil has enormous responsibility, both for the biomes it shelters and its role in climate regulation and carbon storage, and for its role as one of the largest global suppliers of food and raw materials.

O mundo vive uma encruzilhada ambiental. As mudanças climáticas já são uma realidade e afetam as vidas de todos nós, mas de maneira especialmente cruel as pessoas em maior situação de vulnerabilidade. À baixa renda, à violência, às moradias precárias, à dificuldade de acesso a serviços públicos de qualidade, entre outros, somam-se, como fator de risco e redução da qualidade de vida, os impactos dessas mudanças na forma de chuvas mais intensas e concentradas que provocam enchentes, inundações e deslizamentos, ondas de calor e alterações nos regimes de ventos e precipitações que afetam a produção agrícola.

Nesse contexto, o Brasil tem enorme responsabilidade, tanto pelos biomas que abriga e seu papel na regulação do clima e estocagem de carbono, como por seu papel como um dos maiores fornecedores globais de alimentos e matérias-primas.
